Great Places to Eat

This is the back view of our house. There is an exterior door on the top left for access to the top deck. This is a great place for that morning cup of coffee......you can see the ocean over the horizon. This is also where I like to sit and read...plenty of sunshine with a nice breeze to keep you cool. The bottom deck allows access to the side yard. The two downstairs bedrooms open to this deck. The exterior door leads to the bathroom. Sounds strange at first. However, it is a great idea......the kids don't have to tromp through the house wet from the pool when they need to use the bathroom. At this time you must access the fenced in area from the side yard. Our intention is to install a set of stairs from the bottom deck with direct access to the inside of the fence.
This post is titled "Great Places to Eat" for a reason. Obviously I think the decks are great places to eat. You can cook something up in the kitchen to serve, or better yet, walk down to The Coastal Provisions Market (http://www.coastalprovisionsmarket.com) and grab a sandwich or dinner to go. Check it out....you won't be disappointed! If you really feel the need to go out for lunch or dinner, give the Red Sky Cafe in Duck a try. It is just a short drive away and well worth the effort http://www.redskycafe.com. Mark and I know the chef, Billy Price, from "back in the day". The place is small - and has an open kitchen so you can see the chefs at work. Alex and Bryce highly recommend the chicken fingers for the younger ones! And, don't forget to save room for dessert. Hmmm, that might be a good "to go" item that you can eat back at the cottage while sitting on the deck. We will have to give that a try soon and let you know how it goes!

The kitchen is on the second floor and is open to the family room (so you can sit at the table and watch the flat screen t.v.- that is important in our house). The table is in front of a wall of windows which overlooks the backyard/pool. You can see parts of the ocean over the horizon. The table itself is a trestle table which can seat 6/8 . There are two additional leaves for extra seating capacity. Perfect table for picking crabs :)
Front of Beach House

This is the front of the beach house. It is located on a cul-de-sac with bike paths nearby. Our walk down the street to the beach is about 7 minutes. And keep in mind, that is with Bryce :) Bryce and Alex love the bike path that leads to the Chicahauk section of Southern Shores. This path is great fun for scootering (you can get going REALLY fast). Also, if you continue along to the next path you will wind through the trees and come to a bridge that you must stop on to feed the turtles and fish. So, don't leave for your walk without bread!!!
Beach House Overview
The address is 52 Skyline Road, Southern Shores, NC 27949. (If you’d like to look it up on Google Earth). Skyline Road is a dead end which cuts down on traffic tremendously. The beach is about a 5 to 6 minute walk. We have a Roleez beach cart which makes it easier to carry chairs, coolers, boogie boards etc. There are bike trails accessible from our street in the Chicahauk section (adjacent to Skyline Road).
The pool is approximately 12’ x 20’ and four feet deep. One end of the pool has a built-in bench for comfortable seating while soaking up the rays. A charcoal grill is available for cooking outside. The house is equipped with an outdoor shower (hot and cold running water). There is parking underneath the house and a separate parking area/turnaround area for up to three cars.
The first floor is laid out as follows:
Two bedrooms both with sliding glass doors to the first floor deck in back. One bedroom has a futon that can be opened up to a bed. It also has Directv with a Playstation. The other bedroom has a queen bed with only a television for playing VCR tapes. One full bathroom (tub and shower) with an exterior door leading to the deck. This will allow you to enter the house (soaking wet) and jump into the shower if you so choose. There’s also a linen closet. The laundry room is approx. 12’ x 12’ with side by side washer and dryer. There is also a small freezer for bait (if you fish) and/or other items which require freezing.
The house is equipped with a central vacuum. The hose/attachments are stored in the foyer closet. There are hookups in most rooms; they look like electrical outlet covers. Simply pull the cover up, plug in the hose and the vacuum starts. When you disconnect the hose, the vacuum stops.
The second floor can be accessed within the house and from the second floor exterior door (from the carport). It is laid out as follows:
At the top of the stairs to the right are the half bath and another bedroom. This bedroom has bunk beds along with a futon which can be folded out to a bed. Turning left at the top of the stairs is the kitchen and great room (one big room). The kitchen portion is tiled while the great room (and all bedrooms) is carpeted. The kitchen is equipped with an electric stove, standard size refrigerator/freezer and a dishwasher. The table is “picnic” style seating 6 to 8 people.
The great room has a three seat sofa, two full-back chairs and two Poang chairs (very comfortable). A brand new 32” flat panel television is on the end wall with a DVD player (with an assortment of DVD’s). We have Direct HD service.
The master bedroom has several sitting pieces along with a brand new KING size bed. There is also a roll-away bed in the closet; there is plenty of room in the master to open up the roll-away bed. The room has Directv as well. The master bath has a shower only with a vanity and linen closet. Linens are provided for all beds. Towels/washcloths are also provided.
One of the more attractive features of the house, in our opinion, is the “non-rental” feel. The layout is not standard compared to many rental houses, and, we found it to be better built than others we looked at prior to purchasing. The previous owners built the house in 2001; the man was a builder in the Richmond/Chesterfield area which is why they used 6x6 construction.
Since we are renting to friends only, we do not require a deposit. If anything happens, we’ll deal with it like friends would deal with something of this nature. We only expect the house to be left in the same manner in which it was found. We will service the pool, cut the grass and wash the linens/towels etc. You can leave any dirty items in the laundry room.
